About the Centre
The Family Literacy Centre (FLC) on the second floor of the Canada Games Centre officially opened on Family Literacy Day, January 27th, 2010. With 1500 sq. ft. of space and with the help and support of a great many organizations, agencies, businesses and individuals, we have transformed a former storage area into a warm, welcoming place for people of all cultures and ages to enjoy literacy-related activities.
Artists have contributed to the centre and numerous Whitehorse businesses and individuals have donated supplies, equipment, and expertise. We are particularly grateful to the Canada Games Centre, the TD Canada Trust, and to our Advisory Group which is made up of many organizations, agencies, and individuals.
The FLC is a place for creative community education, and sparking curiosity and expression through reading, writing, and the 7 other essential skills for life: working with others, thinking skills ….
The FLC hosts early family programs like Leaping Literacy and Mother Goose, storytelling, music and craft workshops for youngsters, Readers’ Theatre for youth, book clubs, support tutoring, slam poetry workshops, and special projects like our upcoming Senior’s Storytelling program. In these, we aim to build individuals’ confidence for learning, and for taking the steps to growing their literacy skills with peers – in a community environment, with ways to take it home. Creative and fun activities make it real, accessible, and makes literacy and essential skills, stick. And it all comes back to what we do at home, and the people in our lives who enable us to grow: family, in all its forms.
Today, reading and writing are how we interact with much of the world. Using computers, working with others, clear thinking, figuring numbers and becoming a lifelong learner helps us to navigate modern life.
Literacy and Essential Skills enable us to find and keep employment, participate in community, and teach each other – whether it’s following a recipe, deciding who to vote for, knowing how to keep safe on the job, learning new technology, or coaching the soccer team – Literacy and essential skills are the skills of life.
Artists have contributed to the FLC and numerous Whitehorse businesses, organizations, and individuals have donated supplies, equipment, and expertise. We are particularly grateful to the Yukon Government, the Canada Games Centre, the TD Canada Trust, and to our Advisory Group which is made up of many organizations, agencies, and individuals.”

Special Resources
The FLC received a book grant from the Institute for Cross-cultural Exchange (ICE) established in Calgary in 2004. ICE is dedicated to promoting literacy and cross-cultural education. Their current priority is to donate high quality illustrated books from the Middle East and Central Asia to literacy programs serving children in need. In just three years ICE has distributed over 21,000 books to over thirty Canadian non-profit literacy groups.
The Yukon Literacy Coalition received 100 copies of The Boy without a Name by contemporary Afghan author Idries Shah. Drop up to the FLC to read this wonderful children's book.
You can visit ICE's website at www.iceeducation.org.
